I found this book in a Little Free Library and couldn't resist picking it up. This is a cute little mystery novel set in 18th century Japan where a merchants son who longs to be a samurai, Seikei, gets wrapped up in a mystery with Judge Ooka. A man who is considered to be a Japanese Sherlock Holmes.

I thought that this book was sweet and simple and I really liked the mystery It was a little weird that Seikei is kind of left to figure out what the heck is going on with little direction from the Judge. That being said he does a really good job.

The book also includes lots of nods to Japanese history from the Kabuki troop, to the information about the Samurai and the Shogun of the era.

Over all I enjoyed the book but it was a bit young for me. I won't seek out the others in the series but if I happen upon them I'll probably read them because it was an enjoyable story.
