This series is one of my favorite manga series of all time. I'm so glad that it got a second chance at being an anime.

We have reached the end of season on of Fruits Basket which makes it the perfect time to talk about how it was adapted to the small screen from it's original manga format. Just a fair warning there will be spoilers for both the manga and the anime so read with caution if you don't want spoiled.

Fruits Basket centers around a girl by the name of Thoru Honda. She encounters the Shoma family who are cursed by the spirits of the Zodiac. Making friends with Kyo, Yuki, Shigure and the rest of the family all of there lives will be changed forever.

The Good:

  1. The series is continuing past where the original 2001 adaptation stopped. At the end of season one we have gotten further then the 2001 version had and season two has been announce and will continue the series true to the manga. In the anime community a lot of people call it the Brotherhood treatment, as Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood was the second truer to the manga adaptation of Full Metal Alchemist.

  2. Sticking to the source material. This being a truer adaptation we get to see more of the world including the backstories of Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima Thoru's best friends. As well as including more flashbacks of her mom Kyoko.

  3. Kyo's transformation was handled so much better! Near the end of the season we see the true form of the cat, a hideous monstrous form. In the 2001 version Thoru acts completely outside of her character running away from Kyo rather then running to him. This version she acts true to herself going to help Kyo and it just feels so much more natural and right.

The Bad:

  1. Akito's voice, for anyone who has read the manga they are aware that Akito is indeed female. However this is not reveled until way later in the manga. The only people who are aware in the zodiac are Shigure, Hatori, and Ayame as they were alive when Akito was born. Everyone else believes Akito is a male. Having a female voice really frustrates me and pulls me out of the illusion every time Akito is on screen. It also takes away from how menacing Akito is supposed to be at this point.

The Verdict:

All in all so far this is a really good adaptation. They keep very close to the souce material, they include those tiny little details that keep you engrossed. I'm looking forward to season two!
