Full Metal Alchemist is one of the quintessential anime/ manga series of my generation and also one of my personal favorites. It was written by Hiromu Arakawa and is about two brothers who paid a serious price for messing with the laws of nature.

This manga has received two separate adaptations the first one in 2003 and the second Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood in 2009. I will be mostly talking about Brotherhood in this comparison.

The Good:

  1. The character development, everyone is fully fleshed out and well developed. From Edward and Alphonse to characters you meet much later in the series like Olivier Armstrong (one of my personal favorite characters). Each and every one is developed and feels like a real person.

  2. Animation of the Mustang and Lust fight. It is just *chef's kiss* perfect. It's intense and powerful and I loved it.

  3. Callbacks to things that happened earlier. Avoiding spoilers there is a character death that greatly affects many of the other characters

The Bad:

  1. ... I really can't think of anything from Brotherhood that I dislike. The original TV run had a much weaker ending because they finished it before the manga completed its run.

The Verdict:

An absolute masterpiece! Both the manga series and the show are 100% worth your time. The story is gripping the characters are fleshed out extraordinarily well.
